The Sydney pest calendar: what shows up when

Sydney's pest year is predictable: cockroach and ant activity peaks over summer, flying termite swarms appear on warm humid evenings in spring and early summer, wasp nests grow through summer, and rats and mice move indoors as autumn cools into winter. The best time to treat is just before each peak — here's the month-by-month picture.

Pests in Southern Sydney run on the seasons. Warmth and moisture drive most insect activity up over summer; the cold pushes rodents indoors over winter. Knowing the pattern means you can treatbefore a problem takes hold rather than after. The seasonal picture below is drawn from 30 years of field experience across the Sutherland Shire and St George and from general entomology — treat it as a reliable guide to timing, not a to-the-day forecast.

Summer (December to February): cockroaches, ants, wasps, mosquitoes

Summer is the busiest pest season. Heat and humidity accelerate breeding, so populations that built through spring hit their peak now.

  • Cockroaches peak — kitchens, bathrooms and unit blocks with shared walls are the hot spots. German cockroaches in particular thrive indoors year-round but surge in the heat.
  • Ants forage hard through summer, streaming indoors after food and moisture, especially in kitchens and around pavers.
  • Wasps — European and paper wasp nests, started in spring, reach full size and are at their most active and defensive by late summer.
  • Mosquitoes are worst near standing water in the warm months — the Rockdale wetlands corridor and the Georges River bays around Sylvania and Sans Souci see more of them.

Autumn (March to May): rodents start moving in, spiders indoors

As the weather cools, the pest calendar shifts from insects to rodents.

  • Rats and mice begin looking for warm, sheltered nesting sites — and homes offer warmth, food and shelter. Activity indoors climbs through autumn, especially near bushland and rail corridors.
  • Spiders are more noticeable indoors as some species move to sheltered spots; webbing spiders around eaves and subfloors remain active.
  • Autumn is the smart time to rodent-proof — seal entry points before the winter push.

Winter (June to August): rats and mice peak

Winter is rodent season. With cold outside, rats and mice concentrate indoors — you'll most often hear them as scratching in walls and ceilings at night. Roof rats are common near bushland and the rail corridors that run through Sutherland, Miranda, Hurstville and Rockdale. Insect activity is at its lowest, though warm indoor spaces keep German cockroaches ticking over in kitchens and unit blocks. It's the right time to deal with rodents thoroughly, entry points and all.

Spring (September to November): termite swarms, wasps starting nests

Spring is the turning point when insect life wakes up again — and it's the key window for termites.

  • Flying termites (alates) swarm on warm, humid evenings in spring and early summer as colonies send out reproductives. A swarm, or discarded wings on windowsills, means a colony is nearby — see the signs of termites.
  • Wasps start building new nests now, while they're small and easier to deal with.
  • Cockroaches and ants begin building toward their summer peak — the best time to book a preventative general treatment.

Termites are the exception to "seasons": subterranean termites feed year-round, out of sight. Only the swarming is seasonal. That's why annual inspection matters regardless of the month.

When to book preventative treatment

The pattern makes the timing simple — treat just before each peak:

  • Late spring — book a general treatment for cockroaches, ants and spiders before summer.
  • Spring — deal with new wasp nests while they're small, and book a termite inspection around swarming season.
  • Autumnrodent-proof before winter drives rats and mice indoors.
  • Any time — an annual termite inspection, because termites don't take a season off.

Frequently asked questions

When is cockroach season in Sydney?

Cockroaches are most active over the warm, humid summer months (December to February), when heat and moisture speed up their breeding. In our experience across Southern Sydney they build through spring and peak in mid-summer. Booking a general treatment in late spring gets ahead of the peak rather than reacting to it.

When do termites swarm?

Flying termites (alates) typically swarm on warm, humid evenings in spring and early summer, when established colonies send out winged reproductives to start new nests. Seeing a swarm, or discarded wings on windowsills, means an active colony is nearby — a good prompt to book a termite inspection.

Why do rats come inside in winter?

As autumn cools into winter, rats and mice look for warmth, shelter and food, and homes offer all three — so rodent activity indoors tends to rise from about April through the colder months. Roof rats are common near bushland and rail corridors across Southern Sydney. Sealing entry points before winter helps keep them out.

When are mosquitoes worst?

Mosquitoes are worst in the warm, wetter months from late spring through summer, and they are more of an issue near standing water — wetlands, bays, canals and creek lines. In Southern Sydney that includes areas near the Rockdale wetlands and the Georges River bays. Removing standing water around the home reduces breeding.

What month should I book a general treatment?

For most homes, late spring (around September to November) is the ideal time to book a general pest treatment, because it gets ahead of the summer peak for cockroaches, ants and spiders. Autumn is a good time to focus on rodent-proofing before winter. The best treatment is preventative, timed just before each peak.
